SNAPSHOT

As Dortmund slips into 2010, it’s our city’s turn to be European Capital of Culture. With a new museum, concerts, shows, and thousands of German and foreign visitors, it will be a great year.

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY

The airport shuttle bus takes 25 minutes and costs €5.50.

FOOD

Pfefferkorn

38 Hoher Wall, +49 (0)231 143 664, www.pfefferkorn-dortmund.de It’s pleasantly cluttered with antiques, artworks and wooden tables, but the real focus is on the German food which is outstanding. Try one of the seven South American beef steaks.

Taj Mahal

82 Kamp Straße, +49 (0)231 5346 1801, www.tajmahal.de Quality tandoori, including vegetarian Indian dishes served by turbaned waiters. The surroundings are nothing special, but the food is delicious.

FRIENDS

CU Bar

41 Kamp Straße, +49 (0)231 9504 948, www.cu-bar.de Young and rowdy, the patrons enjoy regular speed dating and karaoke nights, and DJ parties. Food is snacks like baguettes, salads and schnitzels.

Wenkers am Markt

1 Beten Straße, +49 (0)231 527 548, www.wenkers.de Finger-food, coffee, cakes, snacks and light meals are served. This is a good place to watch your football team when they’re playing away.

INSIDER TIP

Until 23 December, one of Germany’s largest Christmas markets blankets the city centre daily from 10am (noon on Sunday) to 9pm, with a 45m high tree. www.weihnachtsmarkt-dortmund.de.
