SNAPSHOT

I like the build-up to the festive season in London. The dark nights are lit up with gaudy shop displays and office parties give everyone a tipsy grin. Pubs are also suddenly extra welcoming.

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY

Use our P-AIR bus transfer between Luton and Victoria Station. The cost is ?11.50 and ?23 return. One way takes from an hour to 90 minutes.

FOOD

The London Carriage Works

Hope Street, +44 (0)151 705 2222, www.thelondoncarriageworks.co.uk The Venetian palazzo-style building dates to 1866, when carriages were made here. Breakfasts are a highlight. Eggs Florentine, L6.50 (€7.20).

The Monro

92-94 Duke Street, +44 (0)151 707 9933, www.themonro.com Its fresh-ingredients approach helps lift this gastropub above its peers, as does its renowned Scouse Stew. Northwich rabbit pie, Cheshire wild boar, Lancashire ostrich are notable dishes. Two-course lunch, L8.95 (€10).

FRIENDS

Albannach

66 Trafalgar Square, WC2N 5DS, +44 (0)20 7930 0066, www.albannach.co.uk Stunning grilled fish and some of the capital's best scallops and oysters (and Whiskys) are staple parts of the menu at this outstanding Scottish restaurant.

Imli

167 Wardour Street, W1F 8WR, +44 (0)20 7287 4243, www.imli.co.uk Perfect for setting up a trip to London's theatreland, Imli's tapas take on upmarket Indian dishes sizzles on the tastebuds. The battered chennai fish with mint chutney gets my vote.

INSIDER TIP

Don't get too frenetic buying your Christmas presents - Thursday is late-night shopping for most big stores, meaning you can take your time.
