The run-up to Christmas could not be more atmospheric in Madrid, as roast chestnut sellers appear on the street corners and a special market sets up shop in Plaza Mayor, selling toys, decorations and nativity figures.

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY

A cab from Barajas airport to the city centre usually is about €25, plus a €5.50 surcharge. By Metro the half-hour journey is just €2.
