SNAPSHOT

December is a great time to pop over to Prague as the city’s Christmas markets will be setting up in the Old Town and Wenceslas Square, selling traditional Czech trinkets as well as hot sausages and glasses of svaoák (mulled wine). A far preferable experience to soulless high-street shopping! January is one of Prague’s quietest months for tourists so enjoy the perfect chance to enjoy a snow-kissed stroll on the Charles Bridge, while the Winter Festival (www.praguewinterfestival.com) showcases the capital’s opera, ballet and classical music.

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY

Use our P-AIR shuttle bus service between Prague Ruzyne Airport and any address in Prague downtown and vice versa. The cost is €10.50 and €21 return.

FOOD

Cowboys

Nerudova 40, Praga 1, +420 296 826 107, Don’t go expecting a spit and sawdust theme bar from the Kampa group. This refined 17th-century brick cellar is a serious steakhouse, which serves up rib eye for 415 koruna (€16.50).

U Rumpálu

Školská 14, Praga 1, +420 222 231 044, www.urumpalu.cz I like the rustic vibe at this benches-and-beams Czech tavern, and the smug “in-the-know” sensation you get by eating with the locals. You can’t go wrong with a piping hot goulash for 149 koruna (€6).

FRIENDS

Bar and Books

Týnská 19, Praga 1, +420 224 815 122, www.barandbooks.cz Fancy a whiskey and cigar after a hard day’s sightseeing? Me too, which is why I suggest dropping by the wood-panelled interior of this New York-inspired bar. A Vesper cocktail (made to Ian Fleming’s recipe) costs 165 koruna (€6.50). Open until 3am.

Harlequin

Vinohradská 25, Praga 2, +420 224 217 240, www.harlequin.zde.cz Challenge the locals to a game of billiards at this pool hall/bar/restaurant. At 18 koruna (€0.70) for a beer, you can afford to buy the winner a bottle.

INSIDER TIP

Delicious Czech spirit Becherovka is good for digestion. Grandpa will prefer it to a packet of Rennies.
