SNAPSHOT

I love Thessaloniki in the winter because of the relative calm compared to the busy summer season. A stroll through Aristotelous Square on a crisp winter’s morning is a reminder of how beautiful Greece’s second city really is.

FROM AIRPORT TO CITY

The 78 bus to Thessaloniki leaves from the departures hall every hour. The journey is 40 minutes and is €1. A taxi into town is €18, and takes 20 minutes.

FOOD

Aristotlous

8 Aristotleous Street, +30 2310 230 762 This long-established Mediterranean restaurant is the place for a leisurely lunch. Locals feel the same so prepare to wait for a table. The wide variety of mezes for €15-30 is reason to queue.

Loutros

5 M. Kountoura, +30 2310 228 895 With main courses under €15 and speciality dishes such as fried minnows and mussels in tomato sauce, this centrally located eaterie is popular with shoppers at the nearby market.

FRIENDS

Ladadika

Not a venue but an area of the city (the old Jewish Quarter) between Tsimiski Street and the seafront that’s more reminiscent of Dublin’s Temple Bar - filled with welcoming bars and cafés.

Museum of Byzantine Culture

2 Stratou Avenue, +30 2310 868 570, www.mbp.gr Nearly 3,000 exhibits make up the most renowned collection of Byzantine artefacts – exhibited in chronological order dating from the 4th century.
