Each issue, we talk to an indie record shop owner to find out what they are listening to, who to look out for in their hometown and what their guilty musical pleasures are. This month's muso is Andreas Jakobsen, of Big Dipper (Oslo, Norway)
What kind of musical ethos are you trying to promote?
We specialize in vinyl and hard-to-get CDs. Our philosophy is that we want to give our customers the "old school" record shop feel and sell music that we think is good, regardless of genre or when it was released. We have a webshop that caters for collectors and music lovers all over Norway.
Which bands are you listening to at the moment?
Right now we are listening a lot to Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue, and new albums by Bon Iver, Pete Molinari, Vetiver and Al Green.
Which Norwegian band or artist do you predict great things for this year?
The world should really discover Egil Olsen; he is a great singer-songwriter with a very special, high-pitched, almost girl-like, voice, absolutely great songs with timeless quality and lots of humour.
Which artists are the locals buying at the moment?
Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue, Fleet Foxes' Fleet Foxes, Nine Pound Hammer's Sex, Drugs & Bill Monroe, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's Lie Down in the Light and Airbourne's Runnin' Wild.
If tourists come to your shop, which records should they buy to get a flavour of Norwegian music?
One great band that I always recommend to tourists is Ulver. They used to be a black metal band but are now leaning more towards avant-garde pop, a bit like David Sylvian's solo work, very atmospheric and a bit on the dark side. Rock fans should not leave our shop without at least one album by Turbonegro. We also have our own vinyl releases by some of the biggest and best Norwegian acts, like Minor Majority, The National Bank and WE.
Who are your own personal favourite artists?
The Beach Boys, Curtis Mayfield, David Crosby, John Coltrane.
What's your biggest musical guilty pleasure? Come on, you secretly like a-ha and Lene Marlin, don't you?
Not really, but I'm a big fan of Toto! Big Dipper, 16 Torggata, Oslo, +47 22 20 14 41, www.bigdipper.no
Jeżeli do twojego sklepu przyjdą turyści, jakie płyty powinni kupić, żeby poczuć prawdziwy smak norweskiej muzyki?
