NEW AIRCRAFT
Wizz Air took delivery of its 18th Airbus A320 aircraft in July and with another one in the pipeline to be delivered by the end of the month at the time of writing. The new aircraft come with all the upgrades that Airbus recently made to this model, including the new cabin design featuring more space. The new Airbus A320 is also a more economic aircraft with increased fuel efficiency, which is a significant benefit both in terms of costs and environmental considerations.
NEW BASE
Wizz Air opened its new base in Kiev Borispol Airport to become the very first low-cost carrier operating in the Ukrainian market. Wizz Air will initially operate a domestic network of four routes. The current network consists of Kiev-Odessa, Kiev-Simferopol, Kiev-Lviv and Lviv-Simferopol routes. Coinciding with the inauguration of Wizz Air Ukraine the airline also confirmed that it would start expanding its Ukrainian domestic route network with new flights from Kiev to Kharkiv and Zaporyzhzhia starting from 15 September, both initially flown three times a week.
NEW DESTINATIONS
Wizz Air has further expanded its route network from Warsaw. How long have you been working for Wizz Air?
I joined Wizz Air in October 2004, after having worked in Belgium for over four years. I had no previous experience in aviation and it was a great challenge to become responsible for every legal aspect of an airline's operation. As Wizz Air grows and expands into new markets, and also the regulatory environment changes practically every day, my work is a continuous learning process, never short of new challenges.
Describe a typical day for you at work.
The legal department supports all functional areas of the airline, so there is a great variety of matters that our small legal team deals with every day: we handle corporate matters of the different Wizz Air group entities, draft and review various contracts with business partners, be it airports, aircraft and engine manufacturers or maintenance providers, IT service companies, banks or hotels in different countries. We also deal with various regulatory affairs. Every day brings several matters that represent a priority for other departments, so it is always a careful balancing act to keep things moving at the right speed but with due attention to detail. I do most of my work at my desk, co-ordinating with local law firms in the various countries as necessary, but every now and then I travel to meetings abroad.
What is the best thing about working for Wizz Air?
Wizz Air is a very dynamic and fast growing company, where decision-making is quick and efficient. I enjoy being part of a young and international team with colleagues who are very knowledgeable in their areas, open to creative solutions and committed to succeed in this very competitive market. My favourite part of the work is still the completion of an aircraft delivery. Flying back from the Airbus factory on board a brand new aircraft before it enters service gives me a sense of achievement in a very tangible form!
What is the strangest thing that's happened during a day's work? Recently I was very surprised when, after going through passport control at an airport in a certain non-EU country, a man in a uniform suddenly stepped in front of me, blocked my way and asked for money to let me through to security control. I kept asking why I should pay, he just continued asking how much cash I had on me and as I saw he was getting impatient, I finally told him that I only had a few Hungarian Forints on me, after which he let me pass without payment. When I caught up with my colleagues in transit and asked them if they had the same experience, they told me they did not, so I was probably hand-picked by that man for his little project.
24 czerwca wystartował pierwszy samolot do Cork, 16 września wylatuje pierwszy samolot z Warszawy do Rzymu (Ciampino).

* Also off the beaten track in Budapest is the Aquamarina Hotel, originally a Russian paddle-wheeled steamboat, and now one of Hotelopia's favourite floating four star hotels, priced from €49 / 11,442 HUF / L39 per night.
